Movado · ref Datron HS 360 · 1969–1970s
In the late 1960s Zenith joined forces with Movado, and later Mondia, to sell in the United States under the Movado name. So when Zenith unveiled the El Primero in January 1969, Movado sold that same movement under its own name, the Datron HS 360. That's the story of this watch. It's a 36,000-beat automatic chronograph with a column wheel, 30-minute and 12-hour counters and a date, made by Zenith and signed Movado. Movado put the El Primero in everything from a 38mm steel calendar chronograph to a 40mm integrated-bracelet TV case, often with bold 1970s dials. Zenith Radio, the American company that bought Zenith in 1972, later stopped mechanical production, and Zenith's Charles Vermot hid the tooling so the El Primero could come back in the 1980s. Because a Datron wears the Movado name, it's easy to overlook. You're getting the same movement as a Zenith A386, so judge it on the dial, case and service history.
The caliber
Zenith unveiled the El Primero, cal. 3019 PHC, on 10 January 1969, an automatic column-wheel chronograph at 36,000 beats an hour with 31 jewels, a date and about 50 hours of reserve. Movado sold the same movement as the Datron HS 360, and put the 3019 PHF, with triple calendar and moonphase, in its Astronic HS 360. Some US-market movements were made with 17 jewels to cut import duty.
A high-beat movement that runs for years without service wears faster, so a Datron that runs poorly or resets badly needs an El Primero specialist. Old pusher gaskets let in moisture, and dials and hands get swapped or refinished.
Buying guide
We'd buy the Datron HS 360 Sub-Sea titled with its original bracelet at $4,750 delivered from the US, about $350 under the band. There are about 15 for sale and most ask $5,100–6,925 delivered, with TV-case and Pilot models toward the top and one 18K gold watch at $9,950. Ask for a movement photo showing the El Primero (US-market ones may be marked 17 jewels) and a video of every chronograph hand snapping back to zero, and plan on a service by an El Primero specialist unless the title claims one. Check the seller's feedback and return policy on the item page, and skip the $8,300 blue TV-case listing, which asks $2,745 more than the same look at $5,555.
$4,700.00delivered
The lowest delivered Datron at $4,700, about $400 under the band. The title names the 3019 but says nothing about running or service, so ask for a movement photo and a video of the chronograph resetting.

$4,749.99delivered
A Sub-Sea titled with its original bracelet at $4,750 delivered, about $350 under the band and $757 less than a similar Sub-Sea titled the same way. Plan on an El Primero service, since the title doesn't mention one.

$9,950.00delivered
The only Datron here titled serviced. It's 18K gold, which is why it asks $9,950, well above the steel watches that set the band.
