Movado · ref M95 · 1960s
Movado's M95 is one of the great old chronograph families, and the Sub Sea versions put it in a sealed case. Movado finished the 90M in 1938 and the three-register 95M in 1939, and kept making them until 1969. Over that run they went into all sorts of cases, including water-resistant screw-back cases by François Borgel, who had patented a cork stem seal and a screw-down back. The Sub Sea M95 Analog/Shift sold was a 1960s watch in a 35mm 14K gold case with a screw-down caseback, onion crown and pump pushers. It had a brushed silver dial with an outer tachymeter and an inner snail telemeter, and Movado's kriss hands, shaped like a dagger, in the registers. One thing catches new owners out. The bottom pusher starts and stops the chronograph and the top one resets it, the reverse of most. Many old Movado dials have deteriorated and plenty of nice ones have been refinished, so judge the dial before anything else.
The caliber
Movado finished its two-register cal. 90M in 1938 and the three-register 95M a year later, built around a self-contained chronograph module designed by the firm Frédéric Piguet. The 95M is essentially a 90M with an extra module under the dial for the hour counter. Movado kept making them until 1969, when the El Primero-based Datron HS 360 took over. Both flip the usual pusher layout, with the bottom pusher starting and stopping and the top one resetting.
Dials are the big issue, since many have deteriorated and plenty of clean-looking ones are refinishes. Old gaskets can let moisture in, and a hard-used chronograph needs someone who knows these Piguet-designed calibers.
Buying guide
Only four M95 Sub Sea chronographs are for sale, so the $6,475–9,425 band isn't much of a market read. The one we'd buy is the ref. 19038 titled serviced at $5,525 delivered from the US, the cheapest complete one. Dials are the big risk on these, so look for even aging in daylight photos, and ask for a video of the bottom pusher starting the chronograph and the top one resetting it. Check the seller's feedback and return policy on the item page, and pass on the $3,035 one from Jordan unless you have a watchmaker for the two parts it needs.

Movado M95 Chronograph Sub Sea 19038 Red Hands Serviced
$3,035.00est. delivered
Titled ref. 19038 with the 95M, at $3,035 delivered, about $2,500 less than the serviced one. The title says it needs two parts without naming them, so ask which ones, and only take it on with a watchmaker who knows Movado's Piguet-designed chronographs.
