Tissot · ref Sideral / Sideral S · 1969–1970s
Tissot launched the Sideral in 1969 as the first watch with a fiberglass case. The material was developed in Sweden, weighed about a quarter as much as steel, didn't scratch and wasn't bothered by heat or cold, and it let Tissot make cases in bright colors. A sportier Sideral S followed a year or two later. It's a barrel-shaped 40mm diver rated to 200m, with a steel timing bezel, a multicolored regatta countdown on the dial for sailing starts, and a perforated rubber strap that locks with pins instead of a buckle. Inside are Tissot automatics, first the 784-2 and later the 2481. Age is the catch. Fiberglass goes brittle over the decades, so the case is the first thing to judge, and good collector examples are hard to find. Tissot brought the design back in 2023 in forged carbon, so make sure the one you're looking at is vintage.
The caliber
The 1970s Sideral used the Tissot 784-2 automatic first and the 2481 later, with a date at 3. On the Sideral S the caseback is fiberglass too, molded with the pattern of the strap's inner face, so a plain steel back is worth asking about.
Fiberglass gets brittle with age, so cracks, chips and repairs to the case are the main worry. The integrated perforated strap is part of the design, and a watch without it is missing part of what makes a Sideral.
Buying guide
We'd buy the 1970s Sideral titled with its original Corfam strap in very good condition, at $298 delivered from the UK, near the bottom of the band. There are about 49 for sale and most ask $270–525 delivered, while orange Sideral S divers ask $850 and up. Fiberglass gets brittle with age, so ask for close photos of the case from every side and look for cracks, chips or filled repairs, and on a Sideral S the back should be fiberglass with the strap pattern molded in. Check the seller's feedback and return policy on the item page, and skip the $1,493 Sideral S Regatta from Japan, which carries $265 shipping and asks nearly $1,000 over the band.
