Tissot · ref PR 516 (refs. 44544, 44622) · late 1960s–1970s
PR stood for Particulièrement Robustes, particularly robust, and Tissot first used it in 1956. In 1965 designer Lucien Gurtner reworked the line with a steel bracelet full of holes that looked like a racing steering wheel, and Tissot marketed it to racing drivers. The PR 516 most collectors chase now is a 36mm skin diver with drilled lugs, a big T crown, a rotating bezel and a deep blue-green dial, rated to 100m in Tissot's own brochure. Roger Moore wore one through the Louisiana scenes of Live and Let Die in 1973, and photos show him wearing it off set too. Two near-identical references matter. The 44544 has an aluminum bezel and, on early dials, Visodate under the logo, while the 44622 has a thicker bakelite bezel and probably arrived around 1970. Bakelite bezels break, and finding a replacement takes patience.
Tritium lume. The radioactive lume that replaced radium on Swiss dials during the 1960s and stayed in use until the late 1990s. Its half-life is about 12 years, so a vintage tritium dial now glows faintly, if at all, and has often aged to cream or brown. Swiss dials often carry a T beside SWISS MADE, and Omega's 861 Speedmaster dials did until about 1994.
The caliber
These watches run Tissot's own 786 automatic, seen as the 786-2 and 786-4, with a date at 3. The PR 516 name also covered hand-wound and chronograph models, including chronographs with Lemania movements, so match the dial and case to the reference before you compare listings.
Cracked or missing bakelite bezels are the main problem on the 44622, and replacements are hard to find. The 44544 and 44622 look almost the same, so listings often mix them up.
Buying guide
We'd buy the Visodate Seastar PR 516 titled with a fresh service at $240 delivered from the US, just under the band. There are about 52 automatic PR 516s for sale and most ask $260–370 delivered, while most of the blue-dial divers collectors call the Bond Tissot ask $1,199–1,695. Ask for a photo inside the caseback, where a diver should read 44544 or 44622, and for the movement, since the catalog's divers run the 786 and several titles here name the 784. Check the seller's feedback and return policy on the item page, and skip the $1,695 "James Bond" listing, which asks over $1,300 more than the band.
$216.98est. delivered
The lowest delivered PR 516 automatic at $217, about $45 under the band, and the title says it's working. It ships from Algeria and gives no reference or caliber, so ask for photos inside the caseback and of the movement.
