Tissot · ref Visodate Seastar · from the mid-1950s
Visodate was Tissot's word for a date you could see. The story starts with the 1953 Centenary, made for the company's hundredth birthday, with a date window at 3 that jumped over instantly at midnight. The Visodate name followed around 1954, and Tissot soon spread it across several lines, including the Visodate Camping, the Visodate Seastar Seven and the Visodate Seastar Automatic. Seastar was the name on Tissot's sportier watches, so a Visodate Seastar is a mid-century automatic with a date from that sportier range. Tissot was Omega's partner in the SSIH group at the time, and the two shared suppliers and sometimes designs. The look has been reissued more than once since 2010 as the Heritage Visodate, so make sure a listing is the vintage watch. After that, judge it on the dial, the date and when the movement was last serviced.
The caliber
Visodate was Tissot's name for its instant-change date, which started with the 1953 Centenary. Tissot built its own automatics in the 1950s, and movement numbers changed over the years, so ask the seller to read the caliber off the movement rather than trusting a listing title. The Visodate name also turns up on other models, including late-1960s PR 516 divers with Visodate printed under the logo.
Repainted dials are the main risk, and modern Heritage Visodates are easy to confuse with the vintage watch in a quick listing. A date that creeps over slowly instead of jumping at midnight needs a watchmaker's attention.
Buying guide
We'd buy the PR 516 Visodate Seastar titled with a fresh service at $240 delivered from the US, right at the bottom of the band. There are about 150 for sale and most ask $240–390 delivered, with Seastar Seven, gold-plated and PR 516 versions all sold under the Visodate Seastar name. Look for a solid caseback (a display back means a modern Heritage reissue) and sharp Visodate and Seastar printing on the dial, and ask for a movement photo, since titles name calibers loosely. Check the seller's feedback and return policy on the item page, and skip the $1,395 "James Bond" listing, which asks about $1,000 over the band.
$156.30est. delivered
The lowest delivered Visodate Seastar here at $156, about $85 under the band, and the title says it works. It's a Seastar Seven with no service mentioned, so check the dial print in the photos and plan on a service.
