Omega · ref 166.020 · 1960s
Omega created the De Ville in 1960 as part of the Seamaster family, a dressier watch that sat between the tool Seamasters and the Constellation. It stayed under the Seamaster name until 1967, when De Ville became a collection of its own, so a Seamaster De Ville on the dial dates a watch to the 1960s. The 166.020 is the date model, with the cal. 562 automatic in a case about 34.5mm across. The detail most buyers miss is the case itself. It's a monocoque, a one-piece case that doesn't open from the back, which is why dealers rarely show the movement. That leaves the dial, the crown, the case and the seller's service history as the things you judge. Gold examples with onyx-inlaid markers turn up at dealers, and the no-date versions run the cal. 552. It's a good first vintage Omega if you like a slim dress watch with a date.
The caliber
The cal. 562 is a 24-jewel automatic at 19,800 vph with about 50 hours of reserve, built on the cal. 560 base. Its date is a semi-quickset, which you advance by moving the hands back and forth between about 8 and midnight. Its close relative the cal. 561 went into the chronometer-certified Constellation, and no-date Seamaster De Villes use the cal. 552.
Repainted dials are the most common problem. The date is semi-quickset, so a date that seems stuck may just be set the wrong way, and you should plan on a service if the seller can't say when it last had one.
Buying guide
For a 1960s dress Omega with a date, we'd buy the 166.020 a Japan dealer grades excellent, at $1,180 delivered, near the bottom of the band. There are at least 127 for sale and most ask $1,025–2,500 delivered, with solid 14K gold cases asking $2,485 and up. The case is a one-piece monocoque that rarely gets opened for photos, so judge the dial for a repaint, look for the Omega logo on the crown, and plan on a service unless the title says it's had one. Check each seller's feedback and return policy on the item page, since eBay's watch search doesn't show them.

The lowest ask on a 166.020 at $764 delivered from the US, about $260 under the band. The title says nothing about running, so ask for a short video of the seconds hand moving and the date changing.
