Omega · ref 168.005 · 1960s–early 1970s
The Constellation was Omega's flagship from 1952, and every one carried a chronometer-certified movement. The 168.005 is the 1960s date model, a 34mm automatic with the cal. 561 and, on the ones collectors want most, a pie-pan dial whose twelve facets slope down toward the edge like an upturned pan. Turn it over and you'll find the observatory medallion with eight stars, a nod to the precision contests Omega kept winning at the Neuchâtel and Geneva observatories. Dealers list them from the early 1960s into the early 1970s, in steel and in solid gold, with dog-leg lugs, applied markers and dauphine hands, often inlaid in black. Plenty of Constellations on eBay have repainted dials, so the dial is where you'll spend most of your attention. An original pie-pan on a case that still has sharp edges is the one to hold out for.
No lume. Dials with no luminous paint, read by reflected light from the indices and hands. This is common on dress watches. Lume should appear on the hands and the dial together, so lumed hands on a dial without lume usually means the hands or dial were changed. A few references are exceptions, such as some IWC Ingenieur 666A watches.
The caliber
The cal. 561 is a 24-jewel automatic chronometer at 19,800 vph with about 50 hours of reserve, a close relative of the cal. 562 in the Seamaster De Ville. Some movements in this family carry a small 1 inside the Omega logo. It isn't a date code. It means a taller hand fitting made for raised dials like the pie-pan, which is worth knowing when you're matching parts.
Repainted dials are the big problem, and some redials are good enough to fool a quick look. Cases were often polished, which softens the dog-leg lugs, so an unpolished Constellation is the exception.
Buying guide
We'd buy the pie-pan Constellation a Japan dealer titles overhauled and near mint, at $2,435 delivered, just under the band. There are at least 135 for sale and most ask $2,500–3,275 delivered, with gold-capped and 14K-and-steel cases mixed in and solid gold well above that. Repainted dials are the big risk here, so look for sharp printing, clean facets and applied markers with no paint around them, then check the caseback for the observatory with eight stars and the movement for a cal. 561 (564 on later quickset watches). Check each seller's feedback and return policy on the item page, since eBay's watch search doesn't show them.

The lowest ask on a 168.005 at $1,261 delivered from the US, titled with its original cal. 561. The title doesn't say pie-pan, and at about $1,240 under the band you want close dial photos to rule out a repaint.
