Longines · ref 90xx series · 1954–1960s
Longines filed for the Conquest name in April 1954, and the line caught on fast, which is why so many are still around. The first generation is a 35mm watch with beefy, softly chamfered lugs, a silvery dial with applied faceted markers, and no date. Inside is the 19AS, Longines' own automatic with 19 jewels and a Breguet hairspring. Turn it over for the part people fall for. The thick screw-in caseback carries an enamel medallion. Early ones show an engraved fish over deep green enamel with Longines Automatic Waterproof around it, and a later ref. 9045 shows waves under a dark blue night sky. Automatic winding, water resistance and a screw-down back were premium features at the time, and later Conquests added a date. Around 1959 Longines changed the case and movement, and that year's ref. 9028 brought a central power-reserve display. Conquests came in steel, gold plate and solid gold, so check which one a listing is before you compare it with another.
The caliber
The first Conquests ran the 19AS, an automatic Longines introduced in 1952 with 19 jewels, 18,000 beats an hour, about 39 hours of reserve and a Breguet hairspring. That first generation had no date and lasted until about 1959, when Longines brought in a new case shape and movement. The same year added the ref. 9028, with its cal. 292 and a central power-reserve display.
Refinished dials and gold-plated cases worn through to brass are the usual problems. The enamel medallion can chip or crack, and a damaged or missing one takes a lot away from the watch.
Buying guide
We'd buy the boxed Conquest titled cal. 291 at $760 delivered from Japan, near the bottom of the band. There are about 50 for sale and most ask $675–3,000 delivered, with steel and gold-capped watches in the lower half and solid 18k gold asking $4,000–7,700. Ask for a clear photo of the caseback medallion, since a chipped or missing enamel medallion takes a lot off, and a movement photo that fits the year, the 19AS for a 1950s no-date watch and the 290, 291 or 431 for later ones. Check the seller's feedback and return policy on the item page, since eBay's watch search doesn't show them, and on gold-capped or plated cases look at the lug edges for brass.
