Longines · ref Admiral 5 Star · 1960s–1970s
The Admiral was one of Longines' everyday automatics through the 1960s and 70s, and the five-star versions are easy to spot by the small five-star logo on the dial next to the winged hourglass. A circa-1969 example Analog/Shift sold sits in a 35mm steel monobloc cushion case, with a black dial, applied markers, baton hands and a date at 3, running Longines' own cal. 506. Others are simpler, like a 35mm gold-filled Admiral with a silver dial, slim arrow markers, sword hands, no date and a steel back. The name stretched across a lot of watches, from Pulsations dials to a big orange-bezel diver and 1970s integrated-bracelet models, so judge each listing on its own case, dial and movement. That range is good news if you're shopping. These are well-made in-house Longines automatics, there are plenty for sale, and you can pick the case shape and dial you like best.
The caliber
Admiral was a long-running Longines name, and the movement depends on the year. A circa-1969 Admiral with the five-star logo runs the cal. 506 automatic with a date at 3, a 1970s Admiral diver uses the day-date cal. 508 at 21,600 beats an hour, and a 1977 ref. 8581 has the cal. 6651. The movement photo tells you more than the name on the dial.
Dials get refinished and gold-filled cases wear through at the edges. Monobloc cases open from the front, so a careless service can mark the bezel or crystal, and a tired automatic often shows up as a date that won't change cleanly.
Buying guide
We'd buy the gold-filled Admiral 5 Star with a date, box and papers at $600 with free shipping from the US, in the lower half of the band. There are about 93 for sale with the five-star dial in the title, and most ask $500–1,000 delivered across 35mm date models, 38mm day-dates and 7404 divers, with solid 18k gold far above that. Ask which caliber is inside, since a circa-1969 date model should show the 506 and a 1970s day-date diver the 508, check gold-filled edges for brass and ask whether the date flips cleanly at midnight. Check the seller's feedback and return policy on the item page, since eBay's watch search doesn't show them.
