Omega · ref 135.070 · about 1970
The Genève name goes back to Omega's 1950s catalog, and by about 1970 it was carrying simple, well-made watches like the 135.070. It's a 35mm hand-wound watch with the cal. 601 inside, a 17-jewel movement at 18,000 beats an hour with about 45 hours of reserve. Steel versions have a slim case with straight, angled lugs, and the same reference came in 18k gold with a silver sunburst dial and onyx markers. There's no rotor and no date, just a movement you wind each morning and a dial that's easy to read. That makes it a good first Omega if you like the ritual of a manual watch. Genève dials came in lots of colors and finishes, so compare the one you're looking at with other examples of the same reference. With a watch this simple, the dial and the sharpness of the case decide whether it's a good one.
The caliber
The cal. 601 is a plain hand-wound movement with 17 jewels at 18,000 vph and about 45 hours of reserve. Manual Genèves of the early 1970s also turn up with the cal. 613, while automatic Genèves of the late 1960s and early 1970s used the cal. 565 or the later cal. 1481. The movement tells you a lot about which Genève you're looking at.
Repainted dials and polished cases are the usual problems on a watch that was worn every day. If it stops well short of a full day on a full wind, it's due for a service.
Buying guide
We'd buy the 1970 135.070 titled with its cal. 601 and "RUNS" at $526 delivered from Canada, right at the bottom of the band. There are about 88 for sale and most ask $525–975 delivered, and this page pools the 135.070, 135.041 and 131.019, which all run the same hand-wound cal. 601. Japan dealers list plenty, often with $90–220 shipping, so compare delivered prices, check the dial for a repaint and the lugs for polishing, and expect gold-plated cases to show wear at the edges. Check each seller's feedback and return policy on the item page, since eBay's watch search doesn't show them.
