Zenith · ref Port Royal (various) · 1970s–2010s
Port Royal is a name Zenith used for a long run of style-led watches, starting in the 1970s and carrying on into the 2010s. Collectors mostly ignore it, which is why Port Royals usually sell for less than sportier Zeniths from the same years, even when they share movements. Case shapes vary wildly, from oval three-handers to rectangular chronographs with partly skeletonized dials, so you're shopping a family rather than one reference. The standout is the mid-1980s Port Royal El Primero ref. 95.0100.418, one of the first all-titanium Swiss watches, with a 40.5mm tonneau case, an integrated titanium bracelet and the cal. 3019 PHF with full calendar and moon phase. It also came in gold and in titanium with gold. Oddly, its dial carries neither the El Primero nor the Port Royal name, and few were made. On any integrated model, make sure the bracelet comes with the watch, because those designs don't take a normal strap.
The caliber
There's no single Port Royal caliber, since the line ran for decades. The top of the range is the cal. 3019 PHF, the El Primero with day, month, date and moon phase that Zenith first showed in 1969 and later renamed the cal. 410. The Port Royal chronographs come from the 1980s, when Zenith was using up its El Primero stock and selling movements to brands like Ebel.
Missing or incomplete bracelets are the biggest problem on integrated models. Because the line is so varied, mismatched parts can be hard to spot, so compare against other examples of the same reference.
Buying guide
Port Royal is a name Zenith used from the 1970s into the 2010s, and most of the roughly 96 for sale are later Elite automatics and Port Royal Open models, many from Japanese dealers, asking $2,300–3,325 delivered. We'd buy the Elite 01/02.0450.680 titled overhauled at $2,224 delivered from Japan, just under the band, or for an El Primero chronograph, the 40mm one with papers at $2,875 from the US. Read the reference in each title and match the case and dial to photos of that model, and on integrated designs make sure the bracelet comes with it, since they don't take a normal strap. Check the seller's feedback and return policy on the item page, since eBay's watch search doesn't show them, and allow for import duty on the Japan listings.
