Movado · ref Kingmatic Sub Sea · 1960s
The Kingmatic Sub Sea is a 1960s Movado automatic, and despite the name it's a dress watch, not a diver. Worn & Wound picked out one at 34.5mm with a thin case and lugs, a clean silver dial, a signed crown and a raised medallion logo on the back, and summed up its look as Mad Men styling. Analog/Shift has sold them in 34mm 14K gold with a silver dial, applied markers and a center seconds hand. The Kingmatic name also turns up on a steel 34mm Kingmatic S with a black dial that looks a lot like a Rolex Explorer, and on a 38mm gold-plated Kingmatic President from the 1970s. That variety works in your favor. There are plenty of these for sale, and a time-only Movado from this era gets you a well-made Swiss automatic for sensible money. Pick one with an unpolished case, an original dial and a signed crown, and make sure the automatic winding works.
The caliber
Kingmatic was the name Movado put on its automatics in the 1960s and 70s, and you'll see it on dials as Kingmatic, Kingmatic S and, later, Kingmatic President. Sub Sea was a name Movado used across more than one line, from these time-only automatics to its M95 chronographs, so it doesn't mean a dive watch. Go by the movement photo rather than the words on the dial.
Polished-down cases, refinished dials and replacement crowns are the usual problems. A worn winding system can leave the watch stopping overnight.
Buying guide
For a steel Kingmatic to wear, we'd start with the 28-jewel Kingmatic Sub-Sea in a Borgel case at $281 delivered from the US. There are about 83 for sale and most ask $470–2,425 delivered, but solid 14K gold watches pull that band up, while steel and gold-filled ones mostly ask $270–900. Sub Sea doesn't mean a diver here, so go by the movement photo, and look for thin, sharp lugs, a signed Movado crown and even aging on the dial. Check the seller's feedback and return policy on the item page, and skip the $12,000 Tiffany HS 360, which asks about $2,500 more than any other gold one here.
$267.94est. delivered
The lowest delivered Kingmatic at $268, a steel Kingmatic S Sub-Sea titled ref. 19161. The title doesn't say it runs and calls the dial patina, so ask for daylight dial photos and how long it runs off the wrist.
60's Movado Kingmatic S Sub-Sea 17J Automatic Stainless Watch Patina Dial 19161
$280.99est. delivered
A 28-jewel Kingmatic Sub-Sea in a case by François Borgel, who made Movado's screw-back cases, at $281 delivered, where most steel and gold-filled Kingmatics ask up to $900. No running claim, so ask how long it runs off the wrist and check for a signed crown.
Vintage Movado Kingmatic Sub-Sea Borgel case 28J Automatic
$890.00delivered
Titled as running great, at $890 delivered from the US, inside the band. It's gold filled, so check the case edges for wear through to the base metal.
